Transpolar Arcs During a Prolonged Radial Interplanetary Magnetic Field Interval

چکیده
Transpolar arcs (TPAs) are believed to predominantly occur under northward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) conditions with their hemispheric asymmetry controlled by the Sun-Earth (radial) component of IMF. In this study, we present observations TPAs that appear in both northern and southern hemispheres even during a prolonged interval radially oriented The Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) F16 Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics Dynamics (TIMED) satellites observed on dawnside polar cap (one TPA structure hemisphere two hemisphere) an nearly earthward-oriented IMF October 29, 2005. one associated electron ion precipitation mostly sunward plasma flow (with shears) relative surroundings. Transpolar arcs observed simultaneously in both hemispheres
Two coexisting transpolar arcs are observed on 31 August 2005. We track the formation and motion of the arcs in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, using data from two independent satellites (Imager for Magnetopause to Aurora Global Exploration and a Defence Meteorological Satellite Program satellite). The observations are supported by supplementary ground-based ionospheric convection d...
متن کاملDayside reconnection under interplanetary magnetic field By-dominated conditions: The formation and movement of bending arcs
Based upon a survey of global auroral images collected by the Polar Ultraviolet Imager, Kullen et al. (2002) subdivided polar cap auroral arcs into a number of categories, including that of “bending” arcs. We are concerned with those bending arcs that appear as a bifurcation of the dayside auroral oval and which subsequently form a spur intruding into the polar cap. Once formed, the spur moves ...
متن کاملModulation of dayside reconnection during northward interplanetary magnetic field
[1] On 17 September 2000 the IMF was directed continuously northward for more than 3 hours. Density fluctuations in the solar wind resulted in quasiperiodic variations in the solar wind dynamic pressure, and correlated fluctuations also occurred in the IMF Bz component. The Northern Hemisphere SuperDARN radars observed bursts of highlatitude high-velocity plasma flow during this northward IMF i...

متن کاملSolar Wind and Interplanetary Magnetic Field: A Tutorial
The convection layer completes the transport of energy from the nuclear furnace at the center of the sun to its radiation into space by the photosphere, but most importantly for the solar wind it sets the temporal and spatial scales for the structure of the coronal magnetic field that in turn controls the properties of the solar wind. In this tutorial review we examine the properties of the fie...
